Week 2
eams continued to perform above their league average in the second week of the Webley League matches. Avon went to shoot against Avenue A and fielded their more experienced shooters first to take an early lead which put Avenue under pressure. Bill Fleming just missed one bull for 34 points and Mark Walster and Steve Ray shot 33. Avenue pulled points back only to see Alison McMillan shoot 33 to consolidate Avon’s score which finally totalled 224 points. Avenue’s James Wilby and Steve Parrack also shot 33s and with the rest of the team shooting above their individual averages and with eight points from Avon their last shooter, captain Dee Green needed 32 to draw the match which was significantly above her personal league average. She rose to the challenge shooting the required 32 equalling her personal and career best. The match ended in a draw. Avon taking the top of the table with 3 points and an average of 224.5. Avenue are second with 3 points and an average of 232.5 points.
Snitterfield were at home to Wilmcote who gave the home team 7 handicap points. Alan Brookes was unlucky to miss out on a possible with his last pellet hitting the four for 34 points. The Morris brothers shot 33s which helped to keep the team’s score at the league average with the handicap they finished on 228 points. Wilmcote kept the pressure on with yet another possible from Jamie Clarke, his ninth and consistent shooting of 33 from Graham East, Adam Clarke and Andrew Clingan they finished on 231 to win the match.
Clifford and Binton B were able to field eight shooters and both teams had shooters with some loose shots into the three. The highest score in the match was Binton captain, Benn Chamberlain’s 33, followed by Joe Powell’s 32. The teams were more or less evenly matched with Clifford receiving just one handicap points from the visitors. The final score was Clifford 206 to Binton’s 210 points.
MEB shot against Avenue B with an 11 point handicap. They shot 6 points above the team average to score 214 points which included 33 from Dave Beasley. Avenue’s shooters had mixed fortunes but Joshua Bridge shot a personal and career best of 33 which stood his team in good stead and with the handicap Avenue made it a close run match with a total of 213 points.
The Roderick Baker Cup between the best shooters from each team took place on Tuesday. Results can be found on our website www.sagl.co.uk.
Tonight sees the preliminary rounds of the 4 A-side competition with MEB shooting against Avon A Laugh and Wilmcote against four from the Binton B team at Wilmcote Social Club and Snitterfield shooting against Avon A Go at Snitterfield Sports Club.
