penultimate matches for the Webley Shield were shot on Thursday 27 March.
Clifford who have won all six of their matches in this competition are currently
top of the table with 12 points but Avenue B are still in contention with 10
points. Clifford’s match against Avenue A started closely even though Avenue
once more had only five shooters. Jamie Clarke had the top shot with 34 and
Trevor Morris shot 33. The scores were level after five from each team had shot
but Avenue had seven points in hand. Clifford’s extra shooters Martin Robinson
and Ben Huckfield both shot 30 against the A N Other scores of 28. Clifford put
on eight shooters with Tony Waters as anchor man having a target of 31 to clinch
the match. He shot only fours and bulls to attain his target and the match went
to Clifford by just one point.
Avon SC had eight shooters and were at home to Avenue B who had six. Avon shot
only fours and bulls with all but one shooter scoring thirty or more. Bill
Fleming started with a bull then a four but five more bulls gave him 34 and a
personal best of 34. Avenue had three loose shots but with 26 points in hand and
three shooters shooting better than their average they could afford them. Haydn
Taplin shot 32, Richard Mills 31 and Andrew Radbourne 30with the handicap points
Avenue came out winners with 231 points.
Binton B and MEB both had eight shooters for their match. After three shooters
MEB were in the lead by two points but they were giving away three and they had
to keep it together to win. After six shooters the scores were level at 174 but
Binton still had three in hand. MEB’s rear guard shooters pulled the fat out of
the fire with 33 from Paul Workman and 31 from Fred Williams. Binton B lost by
four points to MEB’s 211 points.
Wilmcote and Binton A also had teams of eight. Andy Smith started with a four
but with six bulls had to be satisfied with 34. Chris Reed started with a bull
and went on to shoot six more for his first career possible. Will Cemis also had
his eye on the bull but was unlucky when his final pellet hit a four for 34
points. Wilmcote had just one loose three on the scoring target but did not hit
the bull as often as their opponents. Graham East and Paul Clingan both shot 33
and Andrea Norris and Andrew Clingan shot 32s. Binton had a handicap of seven
points and finished on 230 points narrowly beating Wilmcote by two points who
finished on 228.
The inter league Triple Six Paper Target competition took place at Royal British
Legion, Badsey on 3 April. Six shooters from Evesham, Redditch and Stratford
Leagues each had six shots at paper targets where a clean bull counted as six
points. Redditch shooters had only nine sixes with fours and fives to score a
total of 180 points. Stratford did better with twelve sixes, two fours and the
rest of their shots scoring five for 190 points. Evesham came out winners with
Adie Lewis scoring 35 out of a possible 36 points and Amy Lewis 33 points.
Collectively Evesham won the competition with 197 points.
The Webley Shield concludes on 10 April with the following matches;- Avenue A vs
Avon; Binton B vs Binton A; Clifford vs Wilmcote and MEB vs Avenue B
