Webley Week 4
eams
met in the Webley Shield League last week with the top two League teams, Avon
and Binton A shooting against each other. There was no handicap involved in this
match as both teams League averages were almost identical – 224.36 and 224.79
respectively. Binton only had six shooters but the first three, Andy Smith,
Chris Reed and Will Cemis all came close to getting possibles with 34 points
each. John Parrott shot 33, Neil Beningfield 32 and Alan Dyer 30 to keep the
pressure on Avon shooters. Avon were four behind after three shooters though
Colin Fulford also shot 34 Adam Clarke shot 33 and Sam Goodman 30. Their middle
ranks managed to pull back points with 32 from Mark Ellis and Richard Groom and
31 from both Bill Fleming and Steve Ray. Alison McMillan’s 29 was scratched as
the lowest of eight scores. Binton took an A N Other score of 28 to win the
match 225 to 223 points.
MEB were at home to Shield holders Clifford. This was another match which did
not involve a handicap as teams finished the League with averages of 207.64 and
207.86 respectively. MEB suffered mixed fortunes with a smattering of threes.
Their highest scoring shooter was Dave Beasley who only joined the team recently
and who was unlucky not to have shot a possible with 34 points. Paul Onions and
Fred Williams both scored 31 and Kath Williams and Tim Onions both shot 29.
Oscar Thornton and Ray Hodgkins shot 28 to give the team a total of 210 points.
Clifford shooters were more consistent shooting only bulls and fours. David
Sibley got 32, Trevor Morris and Ian Perkins both shot 31 and all the remaining
shooters scored 30 which resulted in a win for Clifford with 214 points.
Wilmcote mustered eight shooters for their match against Avenue B who had only
six shooters. Wilmcote suffered from a couple of loose shots but nevertheless,
Andrea Norris, Andrew Clingan and Paul Clingan all shot 33 and John Maycock 32.
Graham East and James Matthews both had 31 and Michael Clarke 29. Derek Powers
was unfortunate to have the lowest of eight scores and his 28 was not counted.
Even though Avenue were short of a shooter, they were not dis-heartened and both
Haydn Taplin and Joshua Bridge equalled their personal best shots of 32 and 31
respectively. Jackie Mills shot 30 which is the best she has shot in this league
competition. Mark Taplin and Richard Mills both shot 29 and Andrew Radbourne 28.
With an A N Other score of 28 and a 19 point handicap from Wilmcote Avenue came
out winners with 226 points to 222.
Binton B had a plethora of shooters turn out though not all expected to shoot in
the match against Avenue A who are still struggling to find six never mind seven
shooters on a regular basis. Avenue had a strong start with Jamie Clarke 34,
Marc Anderton 31 and Steve Everett 29 which gave them a five point lead but
Binton’s rear guard shooters were stronger with Angie Powell equalling her
personal best 32, Sam Powell 31 and Bill Gately 30. Avenue had two A N Other
scores of 28 which lost them the lead and 3 handicap points but it was not
enough to win the game. They lost with 208 points to Binton’s 211.
Tonight the semi final rounds of the Thompson Knock Out Cup are due to take
place. Wilmcote will shoot against Avon at Binton Social Club and Binton A have
a free pass to the final as Avenue A have had to withdraw from the match as they
cannot field a team.
