Ladies & Youth Cups
Whitbread - First Rounds
he
competition for the Ladies Rose Bowl came into being in the mid 1990s and was
the brainchild of Suzanne Storm who not only competed in bell target shooting
but also shot clay pigeon. She instigated the competition and won it for the
first three consecutive years, 1994/95 to 1996/97. She then left the area,
moving to Scotland, but before leaving, generously donated the cut glass Rose
Bowl as a perpetual trophy specifically for ladies who shoot.
The competition is shot in two halves with five pellets on each of two targets.
A “clean” bull, leaving no mark on the target, scoring 5.1 points and a “dirty”
bull, leaving a small mark on the target, 5 points.
This year there were six entrants including the current holder, Andrea Norris.
After the first leg, Alison McMillan who won the competition in 2009/10 was in
the lead having shot a mini possible for 25.1 points. Michelle Dale and Andrea
Norris were in close contention having missed one bull each with 24.1 points.
Jan Beattie entered despite having injured her wrist and shot 23.1 points.
Jackie Mills and Kath Williams, both of whom have won the competition in the
past had 22 and 21.2 points respectively and Angie Powell shot solid fours for
20 points.
Second leg scores were very close except for Jan Beattie. The weakness in her
wrist prevented her from shooting with the same accuracy as in the first leg.
Michelle Dale shot two clean and one dirty bull together with two fours to score
23.2 points. Andrea Norris and Kath Williams both shot 23.1 points. Angie Powell
scored 23 points. Jackie Mills and Alison McMillan shot 22.2 and 22.1
respectively.
Michelle Dale came out the overall winner with 47.3 but Alison McMillan and
Andrea Norris were close runners up with 47.2 points.
The Youth Cup has been in existence since 1979/80 and this year there were five
entrants. The competition follows the same format as the Ladies Rose Bowl. The
first leg put three shooters, Joshua Bridge and Haydn Taplin, cousins who shoot
for Avenue B together with fellow team member Andrew Radborne in the lead all
shooting two bulls and three fours for 22.1 points. James Matthews had 21.1 and
Oscar Thornton 20 points. James Matthews had the better score in the second leg
with 23.2 which gave him 44.3 points altogether and the Cup. Haydn Taplin shot
22 for the runner up place with a total of 44.1 points. Andrew Radborne did well
in his first season of shooting and his first individual competition coming
third with 43.1 points.
Snitterfield Social Club hosted the early rounds of the Whitbread Individual Cup
Competition last Thursday. In two preliminary rounds John Maycock was knocked
out by Alison McMillan and Paul Nixon-Barron was defeated by James Matthews.
In Round One, Joe Powell 24, eliminated Alison McMillan 23.1; Adam Clarke 23.3
knocked out James Matthews 20; Andy Smith shot a mini possible 25 to win against
Derek Powers 21; Graham East 21 won against Bill Gately 19.1; Karl McMillan 22.1
lost out to Steve Ray 24.3; Alan Brookes shot 23.2 narrowly beating Andrew
Clingan 23.1; and Chris Reed and Will Cemis both shot 24.1 in their match but
after a re-shoot Cemis came off best when he shot another 24.1 to Reed’s 23
points. Richard Groom, Steve Hodges, Ben Chamberlain, Richard Mills, Paul
Workman, Michelle Dale and Mark Ellis all had a free pass to the next round.
In Round Two, Richard Groom 24.2 won through against Steve Hodges 22 for a place
in the quarter finals where he will meet Colin Fulford who eliminated Joe Powell
with 23.3 points to 22.1. Adam Clarke shot a mini possible 25.2 against Andy
Smith who could not reproduce the accuracy of his first five shots in the
earlier round. Clarke goes forward to meet Steve Ray who also shot a mini
possible 25.2 against Graham East. Alan Brookes 22 beat Ben Chamberlain 20 for
his place in the quarter finals against Richard Mills who was lucky enough not
to have to fire a shot in the early rounds. Michelle Dale 24 won her place in
the next round when she eliminated Paul Workman 22. Will Cemis was the fourth
shooter to hit five consecutive bulls for a near perfect score of 25.4 which put
pay to Mark Ellis’ chances. He will meet Dale in the quarter finals. The
competition will be concluded on 26 November 2013.
