Roderick Baker Cup
Thompson Cup - First Round
ompetitors
shot for the Roderick Baker Cup on Monday 29 January at Binton Social Club. This
competition is shot by one member representing each league team on a seven shot
knockout basis with 5.1 being scored for a clean bull. Steve Hodges,
representing the Home Guard team, shot five bulls to score 33.2 to knock out
Adam Clarke who represented Avon SC and who shot four bulls for 32.1 points.
Andy Smith had a bye as neither Clifford WMC nor Avenue SSC entered
representatives in the competition.
Fred Williams represented MEB and came up against the current holder of the
trophy, Will Cemis. Williams had two loose shots and only managed 29.2 points
and was out gunned by Cemis who was most definitely on form shooting a possible
which included three clean bulls for 35.3 points. Andrew Clingan shot for
Wilmcote and apart from his first pellet, a four put away six bulls including
two clean bulls for 34.2. He knocked out Chris Green who represented Binton B
who after his first two pellets which were bulls, seemed to lose concentration.
In the first semi final, Steve Hodges had the bad luck to shoot a three but his
other six shots were all bulls for 33.3 points. Andy Smith shooting on behalf of
the Binton A team, stepped up to the plate and just missed out on a possible
shooting 34.3 which put him into the final round.
Will Cemis shot against Andrew Clingan in the second semi final. Unfortunately,
Clingan could not repeat his first round accuracy. He was disappointed when he
shot 31.1. Cemis started with three bulls, slipped a four and finished with
three bulls for 34.1 points which put him in the final against team mate Andy
Smith.
The bells were ringing in this final match. Both shooters shot bulls with their
first six pellets but it was Cemis who had the edge with a bull from his last
pellet and his second possible of the night. Andy Smith unfortunately slipped a
four for 34.2. Cemis retained the trophy with his third consecutive win in this
competition.
Teams shot the first round of the Thompson Knock Out Cup last Thursday. Wilmcote
drew Avenue and both teams lifted their game. Wayne Harris shot 32 the hard way,
with five bulls, a three and a four. Paul Seabury keeping out of the threes,
shot only bulls and fours for 31. Steve Everett kept his shots tight but only
managed to ring the bell once for 29 and Avenue’s remaining shooters all shot 28
for a final score of 204 which was much better than their team average scores
this season but not good enough to worry Wilmcote. Brian Adshead was first to
shoot for the home team getting them off to a good start with 33. John Maycock
notched up 31 then Martin Norris who had some loose shots. After three shooters
the scores were even but Paul Boazman shot particularly well, taking Wilmcote
into the lead when he only just missed out on his first ever possible with 34
points. Andrea Norris and Andrew Clingan kept the pressure on scoring 31 and 32
respectively. Last to shoot was Paul Clingan who popped away at the bull
repeatedly until his last shot failed to ring the bell. He missed the possible
but left the team with 220 points and a good win to go forward to the next
round.
In the match between Home Guard and Binton B both teams had some loose shots.
Binton’s anchor man Ben Chamberlain shot another 33 to equal his personal best
score this season and team captain Rob Johnson returned to the side, not having
shot since November, to score 31. Joe Powell was unlucky to slip a three with
his last shot for 30 points. Jackie Mills, Home Guard’s captain had another good
week scoring 32. Richard Mills and Steve Hodges both shot 31 but the highest
score in the match was from Sam Goodman who shot three bulls, a four and another
three bulls for 34 points. Both teams had eight shooters and after dropping the
lowest score from each side, the final score line was a win for Home Guard with
212 points and Binton B 201.
Clifford shot very well on their home target scoring 211, their highest team
score this season. Three shooters shot 31 a personal best for Amanda Pettitt and
Martin Robinson. Ian Perkins also shot a personal best with 30. However Binton A
gave little away with 33 from Michelle Dale and 32 from Andy Smith and Will
Cemis contributed to a total score of 216 which won the match and gave them a
place in the next round.
Avon shot against MEB. This was a reverse of last week’s fixture but it did not
change MEB’s fortunes. Paul Workman got the best of MEB’s scores with 31, a
personal best. Oscar Thornton, Kath Williams and Fred Williams all shot 30.
Avon’s Adam Clarke just missed out on a possible but still shot a personal best
of 34. Colin Fulford also shot 34. Four shooters shot 31 Jamie Clarke, Alison
McMillan, Karl McMillan and Steve Ray who is not having the best of seasons.
However, Avon who have put together a solid team won the match with 222 points
to MEB’s 202 and go forward to the next round of the competition.
Webley Shield matches take a back seat again tonight for the first round of the
Four A Side Competition which is shot under league rules but on a knockout basis
with a handicap based on each member’s league average. Full details of the draw
and averages are available on our website www.sagl.co.uk.
An inter league match will take place on Monday Feb 11 between Stratford vs
Redditch at Wilmcote Social Club and Webley matches resume on Feb 14.
