Senior Shield

Social Club hosted the competition for the Senior Shield last Thursday with
fifteen participants. Shooters have five pellets on each of two targets with a
“clean” bull counting as 5.1 points and the combined scores decide the winner.
Paul Clingan led after the first five pellets with four bulls and a four for
24.3 points. His brother Andrew, was hot on his heels though with three bulls
and two fours for 23.1 points. These were the best scores on the first target.
Last year’s winner of the competition, Alison McMillan had only one bull and
with 21 points had only an outside chance of retaining the Shield. On the second
target, scoring was better and Alison McMillan rang the bell three times for
23.1 points but it was not enough. Andrew Clingan also shot 23.1 which gave him
an aggregate score of 46.2 and second place in the competition. Paul Clingan
could only manage two bulls, but they were “clean” for 22.2 which brought his
aggregate score to 46.5 points enough to win the competition. This is the third
time he has won the Shield. The only other shooter to have done so being Steve
Ray who was unable to enter this year. However, the record number of wins is
held by the late Ray Warnock, a former team mate and shooting buddy of Paul, who
won the Shield four times between 1996/97 season and his untimely death.
Tonight (4 April) sees the final two rounds of the Four A-Side Competition take
place at Wilmcote Social Club. Avon A Go will shoot against Home Guard and four
shooters representing both Binton teams will meet in the second semi final. The
last match in the Webley Shield Competition will take place on the following
Thursday 11 April.
