Webley Shield - Week 5

maintained their unbeaten run of wins in the Webley Shield Competition when they
won their fifth match in the competition against Home Guard 213 to 211 points.
Both teams had eight shooters in what proved to be a close match. Home Guard’s
Jackie Mills shot 32 and Bill Gately and Steve Hodges shot 31s. Four Clifford
shooters shot 31, Trevor Morris, Tony Waters, Martin Robinson and Amanda Pettitt.
The final score was Home Guard 239 Clifford 237 but both teams dropped 28 then
Clifford got four handicap points from Home Guard which gave them the match.
Avon SC who remain in contention for the Shield did not need the single handicap
point from Wilmcote to win their match. Top shot in the match and of the week
was Paul Clingan who shot his third possible this season. Andrew Clingan and
John Maycock both shot 31s for Wilmcote helping to bring the team a total of 241
points but Avon put up a good show with 33 from Colin Fulford, 32 from Jamie
Clarke and Steve Ray and 31 from Adam Clarke and Richard Groom which contributed
to Avon’s 247 points. Both teams dropped the lowest of their eight scores which
still left Avon with 219 to Wilmcote’s 213 points.
Avenue were at home to MEB and even with seven handicap points from MEB did not
expect to win the match as they only had five shooters to MEB’s eight. Avenue
had a narrow lead at the start of the match which MEB overtook after four
shooters which included a 33 from Kath Williams. However, MEB shot at or below
par. With two A N Other scores of 27 and 28 and the handicap, Avenue came out
winners 208 to 206 points.
The two Binton based teams met with the A team giving away 15 points. Andy Smith
and Will Cemis both shot 34s. Gary Hooper 32 and Neil Beningfield shot 3. The B
teams better score included Chris Green, Rob Johnson and Joe Powell all of whom
shot 31. With some loose shots about and after dropping the lowest of their
eight scores, and adding on the handicap points the final score line was 219 a
side resulting in a draw.

Tonight 7 March, the semi final matches will be shot in the Thompson Knock Out
Cup between Wilmcote and Home Guard and Binton A and Avon SC.
