Webley Shield
Week 3
nly
three matches took place in last week’s Webley Shield competition because
mindful of icy road conditions, Avenue decided to postponed their visit to
Binton Club to shoot against the Binton A team. Clifford were at home and able
to field eight shooters in their match against Binton B, who were giving away
three points. Binton with only six shooters four of whom were members of the
Powell family, had mixed fortunes with 31 from Ian and 29 from Angie but Joe and
Sam did not do as well. Highest scorer in the match was Ben Chamberlain with 33.
An A N Other score of 27 brought Binton’s total to 199 points. Clifford had a
few loose shots but on the whole shot steadily with 31 from Roy Brookes and 29
from Rachael Brookes, Trevor Morris, Martin Robinson, Tony Waters and Ben
Huckfield. After dropping the lowest of their eight scores, Clifford finished on
203 points not needing the handicap of three from Binton to win the match.
Wilmcote went to Tiddington to shoot against Home Guard who had eight shooters.
They shot very well with mainly fives for scores of 34 from Andrew Clingan who
just missed out on a possible when his last pellet failed to ring the bell. John
Maycock and Paul Boazman equalled their personal best score of 32 and Martin
Norris shot a personal best also 32. Andrea Norris shot 31 and Tim Stephens who
has not shot for four weeks shot a steady 30. Man of the match was Paul Clingan
who shot last and leisurely put in one bull after another for a maximum of 35
points. His second possible in matches this season. Wilmcote scored 226 points
in total, their highest score this season and won the match comfortably. Home
Guard with the exception of Steve Hodges’ 33 and Jackie Mills’ 32 shot steadily,
but it was not good enough, even with Wilmcote’s handicap of 10 points to give
Wilmcote anything to worry about.
Avon Shooting Club gave eight points to MEB in their match at Wilmcote SSC. Both
teams had eight shooters and had to drop their lowest score. Avon dropped 29 but
with scores of 31 or more from the rest of the team they were never in any
difficulty. Jamie Clarke and Colin Fulford both shot 33. Adam Clarke, Richard
Groom, Steve Ray and Alison McMillan all shot 32 and Marc Anderton 31. With
tight shooting and no threes on the target they finished on 225 points, their
highest score this season. MEB were less accurate with some loose shots. Their
best scorer was Fred Williams with 33 then Kath Williams and Jan Beattie both
shot 30. The team scored 207 plus the handicap of 8 to total 215.
The first round of the Thompson Cup will be shot tonight the draw is as follows:
Wilmcote vs Avenue SSC; Home Guard vs Binton B; Clifford vs Binton A and Avon SC
vs MEB.
