League

Week 14

inton A knew they had won the 2012/13 League Cup before they met the Home Guard team in the final league matches last week, but the big question was whether they would manage maximum points from this season’s fourteen matches. Sam Goodman was first up for Home Guard, trying for his second possible but after three bulls, his fourth pellet failed to ring the bell. However, he went on to hit three more bulls for 34 points. Andy Smith, Binton’s captain mirrored Goodman’s performance pellet for pellet. Despite getting a number of “Sunday sevens” in practice, he ended the season without securing the illusive possible but it was not for the want of trying. He has scored 34 on three separate occasions in league matches. Mark Taplin, new to shooting this season, saw the benefits of having his own gun shooting a personal best of 31. With 30s and 29s, the team scored 212 points. Binton had only one three on the target and anchorman Will Cemis scored 33 for the sixth time this season to bring Binton’s score to 219 points. Binton won the league competition with maximum points. The trophy remains with Binton who have held it for six of the last seven seasons.

Avon SC were at home to Binton B. Colin Fulford shot his first possible this season and Alison McMillan and Bill Fleming both shot season best scores of 33 and 32 respectively for the home team. The Binton team could not repeat last week’s performance but Ben Chamberlain shot a season best of 32. The final score line, Avon 223 equalling their highest score this season; Home Guard 203. Avon in their league debut finished third.

Wilmcote were at home to Avenue SSC. The match was closer than anticipated by both sides. Wilmcote took an early lead when Brian Adshead looked good for a possible shooting four bulls. His next two pellets were very close to ringing the bell but not quite close enough and scored fours. His final pellet rang the bell for 33. Afterwards Adshead said it was not until he had stopped to think about getting a possible that his aim failed him. Paul Nixon-Barron shot a season best of 33 for the second time and brought the scores level at 123 after four shooters. Paul Seabury shot a personal best of 32 which put Avenue one point in front. Wilmcote’s rear guard shooters put the match to bed with 217 points. Wayne Harris and Dee Green shot personal and season best scores of 32 to give Avenue 214 points, their best team score this season. Wilmcote took two points to give them runner-up position in the league.

Clifford had a smattering of threes but so did MEB. Fred Williams and Sheila Clarke shot 32 and Kath Williams 31 but Jan Beattie did not repeat last week’s performance. With the other members of the team scoring twenty something, MEB finished on 201 points. Only Clifford’s Ben Huckfield stayed out of the threes for 31 points but they were the better team on the night scoring 204 points.

The Christmas Shoot for the Bill Amos Trophy will take place at Wilmcote tonight. Webley League matches start on 3 January Avenue vs Wilmcote; Binton B vs Avon; Home Guard vs Binton A and MEB vs Clifford.
