Webley Shield
Week 2
he
Webley Competition continued this week with wins for Clifford Chambers WMC, now
top of the league table and Wilmcote, now in second place. Clifford were away to
Avon SC who shot consistently on their home target with Bill Fleming, Jamie
Clarke, Richard Groom and Colin Fulford all scoring 32 points. Alison McMillan
had to use a left handed gun but still shot 31. Clifford had a few loose shots
and were unable to ring the bell as frequently but Rachael Brookes and Trevor
Morris shot 31 and Tony Waters and Ben Huckfield shot 30, as did Martin Robinson
whose score took him to the top of the Improvement Table for shooting almost 25%
better this season than last. Clifford’s seven shooters shot 10 points above
their league average and with Avon’s handicap finished on 222 points. Avon were
on 218, putting the pressure on their final shooter, if they were to win this
match. Steve Ray, who arrived late and had to shoot with no time to settle
himself and was more than disappointed with his score of just 30 points which
was not enough to save Avon from defeat.
Wilmcote were at home to Binton A. Both teams kept their shots tight. In
particular, Binton’s Andy Smith and Wilmcote’s Andrea Norris who both shot six
bulls and were on the point of getting their first possible scores but both were
let down when they fired their seventh pellet both of which failed to hit the
bull and ring the bell. Binton ended the match on 220 points which in a league
match would have been enough to win but in the Webley they had a five point
handicap. Wilmcote’s final three shooters all shot 33 and the team scored 219
but with the handicap totalled 224points which won them the match.
Home Guard visited Avenue SSC for their match for which both teams had eight
shooters. Home Guard shot marginally better with 32 from Sam Goodman and Steve
Hodges and the lowest individual score of 29. Avenue’s Paul Seabury equalled his
personal best with 32 and Jo Everett also shot 32, her best score for two
seasons. However, with a lowest counting score of 27 they only totalled 211
points but handicap points from |Home Guard gave them the match with a final
score line of 217 to 214.
Binton B were given two points by MEB but there were too many loose shots for
high scores. Ben Chamberlain did well shooting 33 but he was the only Binton
shooter to score above 30. MEB had a few loose shots but with 31 from Fred
Williams and 30 from Oscar Thornton and Sheila Clarke, they came out winners
with 200 points to Binton’s 198.
Tonight Wilmcote will host the competitions for the Youth Cup, open to shooters
aged 21 or under on the night and the Ladies Rose Bowl. Matches to start at
8.30pm prompt.
