Webley Week 6

Roderick Baker Cup

e are nearing the end of the shooting season but competitions are getting tougher! Monday saw the best shooters from each team compete for the Roderick Baker trophy together with last year’s winner Will Cemis. Alison McMillan (Avenue-RBL), Ben Chamberlain (Binton B), Trevor Morris (Clifford) and Paul Clingan (Wilmcote) all went out in the first round.

Sheila Clarke shooting for MEB, shot 34.2, a personal and seasonal best, to eliminate Andy Smith (Binton A). Will Cemis shot a 35.5 point possible to secure his place in the final, knocking out Colin Fulford (Home Guard). The final was a close run match with both shooters hitting two fours and five bulls. However, Sheila Clarke hit “dirty” bulls when three of Will Cemis’ were clean. Will retained the trophy by shooting 33.3 to 33 points.

In the penultimate matches of the Webley Shield, Binton A though having to give 11 points to the Binton B team came out winners with a score line of 219 to 216. The highest score in the match was from Will Cemis who shot 33 points for Binton A. Wilmcote travelled to Home Guard for their match. Home Guard had the benefit of 9 points from a weakened Wilmcote team who again could only field five shooters and had to rely on two A N Other scores. Paul Clingan was top gun scoring his third possible of the season. The final score line was a draw with both teams having 213 points each, but the rules awarded the match to Home Guard. MEB had eight shooters and were at home to Avenue-RBL who only had six. Avenue-RBL could not get a grip on this match as they did when the teams met last week in the Thompson Knock Out Cup. Their highest score was 32 from Alison McMillan and with a flurry of threes, the team ended on 200 points. Richard Groom for MEB shot six bulls consistently and was unlucky that his last pellet left a small mark on the target and failed to ring the bell. He was very unlucky not to have scored a possible. MEB came out winners with 211 points.

Tonight, 5 April, sees the semi and final rounds of the Four A-Side Competition take place at Wilmcote. The Home Guard B team will give MEB’s A team 10 points and Home Guard’s A team will be given 9 points by Avenue-RBL’s four shooters.

A big thank you to all those who attended the Charity Quiz last Saturday. The winning team, Mushy Peas, Garden Peas and Her Peas won and generously gave their winnings back to the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. Iceberg Ahead were runners up. £196.00 was raised which will be gift aided to the charity at the end of the season.
