Webley Shield
Week 4

WMC keep the Webley Shield firmly in their sights with another win which sees
them undefeated for four matches in a row. Last week they shot at Wilmcote
against the MEB team who tried hard to break Clifford’s run of success in this
competition. Rachael Brookes and Trevor Morris both put 30 on the scoreboard and
Martin Robinson together with Tony Waters shot 29s. Brit Hounslow and Roy
Brookes had too many threes for high scores but with an A N Other score of 28
and 22 points from MEB’s handicap Clifford finished on 219. MEB’s Fred Williams
shot 34, missing out on a possible when his fourth pellet just failed to ring
the bell. Kath Williams shot 32 and with 31s from Karl McMillan and Richard
Groom, they kept Clifford under pressure. Sheila Clarke and Ray Hodgkins both
shot 29 and par 28 from Gordon Spencer gave them a total score of 214 which was
eight above their league average but notquite enough to stop Clifford.
In the match between Binton B and Wilmcote, who were only able to field six
shooters, all of whom kept out of the threes; Paul Clingan was up first and shot
five bulls then slipped a four before finishing on a bull for 34 points. Brian
Adshead and Paul Boazman shot 32s which was a personal and seasonal best for
Boazman. Andrea Norris shot a competent 30 and Tim Stephens and John Maycock
both scored 29 with an A N Other score of just 24 their total score was 210.
Binton’s Bill Fleming was on form shooting 32 but the rest of the team could not
keep up. Gordon O’nions and Sam Powell gave a good show with 30 each and 29 from
Jon Packard. Joe Powell had a couple of stray threes for his 27 and Chris Green
was on for a par 28 until he was unlucky to have a missed shot. Rob Johnson came
to the rescue as last man and shot 31 which with 8 points from Wilmcote gave
Binton a total of 214 and the match.
Avenue-RBL who had only six shooters were away to Home Guard’s team of seven.
Alison McMillan started the ball rolling for Avenue-RBL with a competent 31 to
be followed by Paul Nixon-Barron’s 29 then 30 from Guy Ganderton. Jo Everett and
Dee Green evened out their threes with bulls, both having to be satisfied with
par 28s. Steve Ray’s rear guard action put a much needed 33 on the scorecard.
With only 23 from A N Other and three handicap points from the home team,
Avenue-RBL finished up on 205 points. Home Guard were not as accurate as they
can be with 30 points from Bill Gately and Steve Hodges. There were too many
threes scattered through the rest of the team’s shooters with 29 from Jackie
Mills, 28 from Derek Powers and 27 from Richard Mills and Irene Parsons. Joshua
Bridge was disappointed with his score. Home Guard finished on 194 which was not
enough to win rest the match from Avenue-RBL.
