Webley Shield - Week 7
he
final matches for the Webley Shield were shot last Thursday when Clifford, a new
team this season scooped the trophy with an undefeated run of six matches and
twelve points.
Clifford met Binton B who had a 24 point handicap. The high scorers were Joe
Powell 32 and Bill Fleming 31. Rob Johnson, Jon Packard and Ben Chamberlain shot
30 each and Gordon O’nions and Sam Powell both had a couple of stray shots for
26 and 27 respectively. The best Clifford could do was 30 from Trevor Morris and
Tony Waters then 29 shot by Brian Smith. Rachael Brookes and Britt Hounslow both
shot par 28s and threes brought down Martin Robinson’s and Roy Brookes scores
but the handicap was more than enough to make up for any shortfall in Clifford’s
accuracy. The final score 221 to 206.
Home Guard and MEB both fielded eight shooters for their match. Both teams ended
the league with 205 points so there was no handicap in this match. Jackie Mills,
Steve Hodges and Colin Fulford all shot 32 and Haydn Taplin and Sam Goodman both
shot 29 but loose threes brought down the scores of Richard Mills, Bill Gately
and Joshua Bridge to below 30. Home Guard finished on 210 points. MEB were less
accurate with 31 from Jan Beattie and Sheila Clarke. Two shooters got 30, Kath
Williams shot par 28 and Paul Workman 27. Oscar Thornton shot three bulls but
lost concentration with the rest of his pellets and Gordon Spencer had trouble
finding the bull. MEB finished on 203 points.
Wilmcote again only had five shooters and had to rely on two A N Other scores.
However, Paul Clingan shot his fourth possible this season and Andrea Norris put
32 on the scoreboard. John Maycock and Tim Stephens both shot 29 but Paul
Boazman struggled with the target. With three points from Binton A they finished
on 210 points. The Binton A team shot steadily with 33 from Andy Smith, 31 from
John Parrott, Alan Dyer and Will Cemis. Michelle Dale, Gary Hooper and Neil
Beningfield shot 30 and Chris Reed’s score of 29 was dropped as the lowest of
Binton’s eight shooters. Binton’s total was 216 points which won the match and
gave them eight points in the competition to come runners up.
The final of the Thompson Cup will be shot tonight at Wilmcote Social Club
between Avenue-RBL and Binton A.
