Webley Shield - Week 1

lifford got off to an amazing start in the Webley League when they trounced Avenue-RBL 222 to 197 points. The club’s investment in a FWB 700 air rifle has resulted in much improved performances all round including personal best scores of 33 from Trevor Morris and 31 from Chris Ward. Brian Smith shot 29, Rachael Brookes and Tony Waters both scored 28, Amanda Pettitt 27 and Martin Robinson 26. Simon Alcock’s score was dropped as the lowest of Clifford’s eight scores. The team scored 202 which was 12 points above their previous best and they did not need the 20 point handicap from Avenue-RBL. The visiting team struggled to find the bull and their best scores were 31 from Steve Ray and 30 from Steve Everett. Peter Mole pulled his fifth shot, only scoring a two but he still managed 29. Paul Nixon-Barron kept out of the threes for his 29. Guy Ganderton , Jo Everett and Dee Green all shot below par.

Binton B gave Home Guard a one point handicap in their match which saw a personal best from Ben Chamberlain who just missed out on a possible, and Richard Mills (Home Guard) who shot 32. Binton’s Jon Packard and Joe Powell equalled their personal best scores of 32 and 30 respectively. Binton had few loose shots with 31 from Bill Fleming, Chris Powell and Roy Clarke 30, and Sam Powell 28. This was a very close match with first Home Guard having a narrow lead which they then lost to Binton. Home Guard raised their game with Colin Fulford just missing out on a possible when his fourth pellet failed to ring the bell, Jackie Mills and Steve Hodges both shot 31, Bill Gately 30, Derek Powers shot a par 28 and Haydn Taplin 27. Joshua Bridge had the lowest of Home Guard’s eight scores which was scratched. Binton B won the match by just one point 215 to 214.

Wilmcote Club hosted the match between MEB who had a hard time against an on form team from Binton A. Binton shot only bulls and fours and every individual scored 30 points or more with Gary Hooper and Alan Dyer shooting personal best scores of 33 and 32 respectively. Andy Smith scored 33, Chris Reed and Neil Beningfield both shot 32, Will Cemis 31 and John Parrott 30. MEB’s Sheila Clarke and Kath Williams also shot fours and bulls for 31 and 30 respectively. Paul Workman and Ray Hodgkins both shot par 28s. Oscar Thornton had two threes for 27 and Fred Williams who started with two bulls had bad luck with his next two pellets before finishing with two more bulls for 27. With a 12 point handicap from Binton, MEB who shot well below their average performance, finished on 208 but Binton’s final score of 223 points won the match.
