eams shot in the second week of matches in the Centenary Competition last Thursday. Avenue-RBL entertained Home Guard when both teams used Derek Powers’ BSA “Club” rifle which he acquired second hand in 1961 but which still has all its original parts including an historically robust spring loading lever action and a trigger which needed very firm pressure to fire. Avenue-RBL took an early lead which they managed to hold on to until the sixth of their eight shooters came to grief. Jo Everett only managed one of the team’s six bulls but she managed to keep all her shots tight to give her 29 which proved to be the highest score of the week. Irene Parsons led a rear guard action which ended with Home Guard totalling 199pts to Avenue-RBL’s 194pts but both sides had to drop their lowest score which worked in Avenue-RBL’s favour giving them victory with 182pts from scoring pellets which included 26 fours, 14 threes and 3 twos to Home Guard’s 178pts comprising five bulls, 22 fours, 21 threes and a two.

Binton A shot on their home target against rivals Wilmcote. Binton only fielded six shooters as Simon and Michelle Dale were absent, celebrating the birth, earlier in the day, of their first child, Hannah Louise. Wilmcote were also short of a shooter. This match saw Binton take an early lead which then switched to Wilmcote who held on to it. Binton shooters were able to hit only three bulls between them, 20 fours, 17 threes a single two and one no scoring pellet whereas Wilmcote managed five bulls, 18 fours, 19 threes and had no stray pellets scoring either two or nil. The highest score in this match was 27 which was achieved by Neil Bragg for Binton and Brian Adshead and Andy Morris for Wilmcote. Wilmcote came out winners with 175pts to Binton’s 172pts.

MEB who had eight shooters, were at Wilmcote shooting against Binton B who had seven. Neither team had pellets which scored nil but Binton had plenty of twos which brought their scores down. The highest score in this match was 27 again shared by Chris Green and Joe Powell for Binton and by Ray Hodgkins, Gordon Spencer and Kath Williams for MEB who was the best shooter with three bulls which were unfortunately pulled down with three less accurate shots. MEB’s counting scores included 23 fours, 17 threes and a two to give them a total of 182pts which left Binton in the shade following their 24 fours, 13 threes and nine twos.

Wilmcote lead the Centenary Competition Table with four points from two matches followed by Binton A, Avenue-RBL, Home Guard and MEB all on two points and Binton B are holding up the table not having won a match yet. Avenue-RBL’s Steve Ray is currently top of the individual averages table with 30 and second place is shared by Jo Everett and Steve Hodges with an average of 29.

Tonight sees the start of the Four A Side Competition with a team from Home Guard meeting one from the MEB; four from each of the Binton teams have been drawn against each other in a local derby; a second MEB team will meet a team from Wilmcote and a second Wilmcote team meet a second team from Home Guard.
