Ray Warnock
Snap Report &
League Week 5
League members were saddened this week at the news that Ray Warnock, a stalwart of the league for over 40 years, had passed away. Ray was a callow youth of 16 when he joined the MEB team which shot from the old electricity board premises in Arden Street with the sound of electric motors humming in the background. He enjoyed his shooting and took it seriously taking part not only in bell target but also 10 metre shooting events. He went on to become a founder member of the Henley in Arden Air Rifle and Pistol Club. For more than 30 years Ray used his Walther LGR rifle and never showed any interest in the newer pre-charged gas rifles which have become popular in the sport. Over the years Ray saw success not only as a member of the MEB team but also in the Pairs Competition, first with team mate C Bailey and in more recent years with Paul Clingan; he was also a past winner of the Senior Shield, the Roderick Baker Cup and the Whitbread Individual Trophy a number of times.
he Snap Shoot Competition was held at Binton on Tuesday. This competition requires shooters to be not only accurate but also quick. Shooters qualify for the final round only if they can manage a score of 22 or more from five pellets shot within one minute. Andy Smith was the first to try his luck and was the first to qualify. Alan Brookes also qualified at his first attempt as did Andy Morris who shot five bulls, an amazing feat given the short time allowed. Paul Clingan took two attempts to qualify and Will Cemis was timed out on his first attempt but then went on to shoot 21 and then on his third attempt, he too put in five bulls for 25pts. Michelle Dale was the only woman who qualified for the final. Valiant, but unsuccessful attempts to qualify were made by John Maycock, Louise price, Paul Nixon Barron and Simon Dale.
In the final round, Andy Morris could not reproduce the accuracy shown earlier
and though he shot three bulls he was timed out after four pellets. Paul Clingan
shot all fours for 20 and Michelle Dale was eliminated as unfortunately she
failed to find the bull. Andy Smith managed two bulls but a three brought his
score to 21 and Alan Brookes stayed out of the threes also scoring 21. A shoot
off for second place saw Alan Brookes come off best with 21.2pts. Will Cemis was
the overall winner with a score of 22pts.
n
the fifth week of league matches, Andy Morris shot a possible in the match
between Binton A and Wilmcote. So far this season, we have had a possible every
week from a different shooter, long may this high standard continue. Andy was
first to the target and set the bell ringing to notch up his first possible of
this season which naturally gave the Wilmcote team an early lead in this match.
Team mates, Lyn Brookes, John Maycock, Brian Adshead, Tim Stephens and Jon
Packard, who was making a return to shooting after the Guards team folded at the
end of last season, all shot 30. Alan Brookes shot 29 and Paul Boazman 28. The
lowest of the eight score was dropped to give Wilmcote a total of 214 points.
Binton A put Gary Hooper on first who with fours and bulls scored 31. He was
followed by Simon Dale who with bulls and fours scored 32. Michelle Dale and
John Parrott repeated the 31 and 32 scores to put Binton in the lead by just one
point. Alan Dyer shot 30 and Neil Bragg 28 which gave the lead back to Wilmcote
but Binton's anchormen Will Cemis and Andy Smith shot 30 and 31 respectively to
snatch the game from Wilmcote. After dropping their lowest score, Binton
finished on 217 points.
Binton B fielded only six shooters in their match at Wilmcote against eight from
the MEB. Bill Fleming and Mike Perry both shot 30 with Brian Portman having the
bad luck of a missed shot. Ben Chamberlain and Alan Watts upped the ante with
scores of 32 a piece which left Gordon O'nions as last man who scored 28. With
the addition of an A N Other score Binton finished on 201 points. MEB shot
without Paul Clingan. Richard Groom started the team off with 28 followed by Jan
Beattie and Fred Williams who both shot 30 which put MEB in the lead. Kath
Williams and Ray Hodgkins struggled to find the bull and had to be satisfied
with scores of 29 and 27. Alison McMillan had the teams highest score of the
night when with bulls and fours she shot 32. Karl McMillan and Gordon Spencer
finished of the shooting, each scoring 29. MEB dropped the lowest of their eight
score to total 207.
Avenue-RBL were at home to Home Guard. Richard Mills made a steady start with 29
and was followed by the league's youngest shooter Josh Bridge who had mixed
fortunes. Jackie Mills who has not been shooting every week because of a bad
shoulder put away four bulls and three fours for 32 much to her own surprise.
Colin Fulford and Steve Hodges also shot 32. Irene Parsons and Bill Gately both
slipped a pellet into the threes but they made up for it with two bulls to score
29. This gave the team a score of 208. Avenue-RBL's performance lacked lustre
and they had too many loose pellets without the comfort of bulls to pull back
the points. Steve Ray shot a disappointing 31, Paul Nixon Barron 30, Paul
Seabury gave a very creditable performance with 29. Dee Green also shot 29. The
rest of the team were also-rans with scores of 27.
Matches this week (29 Oct) Avenue-RBL vs MEB; Binton B vs Binton A and Wilmcote
vs Home Guard.
