Christmas Shoot
wo
competitions, the Bill Amos Trophy shot with an open sighted gun donated by Bill
many years ago and the Open Sight Christmas Competition, were shot at Wilmcote
Sports & Social Club last week. Contestants had five shots for which they paid
50 pence to enter each competition as many times as they wished. The open
sighted rifles require both a steady eye and hand. Nineteen shooters entered the
Bill Amos Competition and scores ranged from zero where the shooter failed to
hit the target at all to 20 points. There was only one "clean" bull, shot by
Will Cemis and no "dirty" bulls at all. 30% of all pellets went into the fours,
29% into the threes and 27 pellets missed the target all together. Alan Brookes
and Paul Clingan both shot five fours to score 20 points and in a shoot off,
Alan shot two fours and three threes for 17 points and Paul Clingan shot two
fours, two threes and another four for 18 points and first prize.
Shooters can use their own open sighted rifles in the Christmas Competition and
they can enter as many times as they wish. The accuracy of shooters was much
better in this second competition. There were two "clean" bulls, and seven
"dirty" bulls shot and only seven pellets missed the target completely, the
majority of the rest going into the fours. Only one individual managed to shoot
two bulls in any single attempt and this was Fred Williams. He had two attempts
and both times he shot two fours, a "clean" bull, followed by a "dirty" bull and
a final four for 22.1 points and was the outright winner of this competition.
Runner up was Paul Clingan whose best score in his four entries was 21 points.
The shooting season re-commences after a Christmas and New Year break, on 7
January 2010 matches between Avenue-RBL and Binton B; Binton A and Home Guard
and Wilmcote and MEB in the first week of the Webley Shield Competition.
