League

Week 9

n last week's penultimate league matches, Avenue-RBL gave their best performance in the league for a number of years when they met Binton B, who although they have been struggling all season to field a full team of seven shooters has been turning in respectable scores. Avenue-RBL amassed 220 points which was the highest score from all teams that night. Bill Fleming shot four bulls and three fours for 32. He was followed by Mike Perry who shot bulls and fours for 31. Roy Clarke shot next and he started steadily enough with three fours but then two stray pellets went into the threes before he finished with another four, for a disappointing score of 26. Alan Watts put away five bulls for 33 points and Gordon O'nions shot 30 which was a personal best this season, before anchorman Ben Chamberlain finished with 30 points. With an A N Other score of 28 Binton scored a total of 210. In reply, Louise Price shot first for the home team and though she had a stray three and was unlucky that one of her fours did not ring the bell, she shot four bulls for 31 points. Next up was Guy Ganderton who had two threes but also three bulls for 29 points. Jo Everett started with a couple of fours but then she shot three bulls, followed by two more fours for 31 points. Peter Mole started with a clean bull then shot a steady string of fours for 29 - was a pattern emerging here? Paul Seabury shot fours and bulls for a personal best of 31. He was followed by Paul Nixon-Barron who also shot fours and bulls for 31, breaking the pattern. Steve Everett who has been shooting below average, shot a four followed by four clean bulls and ended with a four and a bull for a season best of 33 points. Steve Ray shot last and was on for his fourth possible of the season until his last pellet left the smallest of marks on the target and the bell failed to ring so he had to settle for 34 points. The team having eight shooters, dropped one of the scores of 29 and won their first match in the league this season.

In the match between Binton A and Home Guard there were too many threes shot by the visitors. Richard Mills started with a steady 29 then Jackie Mills who has been suffering with a bad shoulder had bad luck scoring two threes for 26. Joshua Bridge is not seeing the rewards for the effort he makes and unfortunately only scored 23. Irene Parsons and Bill Gately shot 28 each before Steve Hodges shot bulls and fours for 32. Derek Powers scored 27 and finally Colin Fulford shot five bulls and fours for 33 points. Dropping the lowest of the eight scores, Home Guard finished on 203. Binton A shot with just one three on the board. Andy Smith and Neil Beningfield both scored 32, Simon Dale scored 31, Will Cemis, Michelle Dale Neil Bragg and Alan Dyer all shot 30 and Gary Hooper shot 29. Dropping the lowest of their eight scores, Binton finished on 215 points.

MEB and Wilmcote had a close match. Andy Morris dropped a point from his usual 34. Paul Clingan started with a four but went on to shoot six bulls for 34 which put MEB in the lead by just one point. Jan Beattie increased that lead to four points with her 32. Wilmcote took the odd point back during this match as Alan Brookes shot 32, Lyn Brookes, Brian Adshead and Paul Boazman all shot 30, John Maycock, Jon Packard and Tim Stephens all shot 29 but MEB maintained the advantage when Kath and Fred Williams both shot 31, Karl McMillan shot 30 with Alison McMillan and Ray Hodgkins both shooting 29 and Gordon Spencer shot 28. Both teams fielded eight players and after dropping the lowest score from each side, MEB came out winners with 216 points to Wilmcote's 213.

The final matches in the league will take place tonight, 10 December when Binton B meet MEB; Home Guard meet Avenue-RBL and Wilmcote meet Binton A. The Whitbread Individual competition will be shot to its conclusion on Tuesday 15 December at the Home Guard Club and the Christmas Shoot will be held at Binton Club on Thursday 17 December 2009.
