Week 12

n the turf war match between the new and the old Guard at the Home Guard Club, Tiddington, Guard Jon Packard equaled Home Guard's Richard Mills' opening score of 32; Jackie Mills started with a three but went on to get two bulls for 29 whilst young Carl Rapson for Guards got away with a bull followed by fours and a bull to end for 30 which put Guards ahead for what was to be the only time in the match. Irene Parsons repeated her a personal best of 30 with a hat trick of bulls and one rogue three then Doug Dampier for Guards, got stuck in the fours until his last pellet finally rang the bell for 29 to make it level pegging again. Bill Gately upped the ante when he slammed in five bulls but failed to keep his nerve with the sixth pellet which, much to everyone's disappointment, was a four as was his final pellet but it gave him a personal best score of 33. Guard Ruth Dampier could only manage 29 so Home Guard were four ahead when Colin Fulford also slammed in five bulls and two fours to share the Home Guard's top score of 33. With the match slipping out of reach for Guards, Fran Westwood equaled her personal best of 32, only to watch Sam Goodman match it for the Home Guard. Newbie, Wendy Taplin got a gutsy 31 when she opened with three bulls but followed by Home Guard's Ben Goodman who struggled for 28 which ended up being scratched. Nigel Taplin was last man for Guards but he struggled between threes and fours for 24. Home Guard's eighth shooter, Carl Villiers equaled his personal best of 31 for the third time to finish off the win in style. With what was mostly a night of excellent shooting all round, Home Guard won the match with 220pts, well above the team's seasonal average of 209.

Brian Portman was first to shoot in the match between Avenue-RBL and Binton B. He started with a bull then slipped two threes before a seal went on his gun and he had to borrow Bill Fleming's pre-charged Feinwerkbau to finish his turn with a steady run of fours for 27. Jo Everett had no stray threes and some tight shots on the bull but only rang the bell once for 29 to put the team in the lead for the only time during this match. Mike Perry took his time to shoot 30 which Steve Everett could not match. Bill Fleming shot a four but then rapidly banged in four bulls followed by a four and a final bull for 33 which gave Binton a comfortable lead. Guy Ganderton and Dee Green for Avenue-RBL together with Roy Clarke and Gordon O'nions for Binton B all shot 30. Peter Mole continues to improve his aim with 26. He was followed by Lyn Brookes for Wilmcote who shot a steady 29. MEB's middle ranks Richard Groom, Kath Williams and Sheila Clarke with their scores of 29, 29 and 31 were not as good as Wilmcote's John Maycock, Gareth Morris and Alan Brookes who all shot 31 increasing the team's lead, though Jan Beattie did managed to pull a couple of points back with her 31. Tim Stephens shot a string of fours punctuated with a three and a bull for 28. MEB's anchor man was Gordon Spencer who had an unsettled night shooting only 25 which brought the team's total to a disappointing 207. Wilmcote's Jack Shipton shot 30 as did Trev Skinner to complete the eight man team. After disregarding their lowest score of 28, Wilmcote won the match with 217pts and top the league.
