Webley Report

Week 2

eague winners Binton A were handicapped by 18pts when they went to Avenue-RBL. Both teams suffered from a tight target with pellets which hardly left any mark on the target failing to ring the bell until Avenue's final shooter Steve Ray came to the target and showed how it should be done. He shot seven bulls to give him his first possible of the season. Andy Smith started for Binton A with 30 but Louise Price for the home team could only score 28. Simon Dale shot three bulls for 31 and although Jo Everett started with a bull it was not to be repeated so she scored 29. John Parrott managed two bulls for 30 and Paul Nixon-Barron shot one bull which was pulled down with a three. Michelle Dale kept up the pace, chipping away at that handicap when she scored 33. Both teams fielded eight shooters and so Jeff Smith's and Peter Mole's scores ended up being scratched. Binton's Will Troth shot 31, Alan Dyer was disappointed with his 27 and Neil Beningfield shot 32pts. For Avenue-RBL, Steve Everett and new shooter Kerry Davies both shot 30 and Dee Green had two bulls pulled down by two threes for 28. Binton's total for the match was 214pts and Avenue-RBL's was 191; therefore with only Steve Ray left to shoot it was clear that short of a disaster Avenue with the 18 bonus points would win the match but the team didn't tell Steve this and he was encouraged to get as many points as he could so he took is time and his aim was true. Avenue-RBL's total was 226pts but such a high score works against them in the Webley Shield Table and puts them second with 4 points and a team average of 224.5pts.

In the match between Binton B and MEB, the home team who had to postpone their first match for lack of a team, fielded seven shooters who shot exceptionally well and despite getting two threes on the board, no one scored less than 30 which resulted in the team scoring 221pts which is 10 more than their league average. MEB shot well, also putting two threes on the board and were only beaten by one point and the Webley handicap of two points. Paul Clingan was first up for MEB and shot his fifth possible of the season. Bill Fleming was first to shoot for Binton B. Two fours followed by five bulls gave him a respectable score of 33. Richard Groom (MEB) shot a string of fours for 28. Mike Perry shot fours and bulls for 32 for Binton. The middle ranks for Binton shot marginally better than those of MEB with Roy Clarke 30, Gordon O'nions, Kevin Johnson and Ben Chamberlain all shooting 31. Rob Johnson, captain of the Binton team, shot last scoring 33. For MEB, Jan Beattie shot 30, new shooters this season Alison and Carl McMillan shot 29 and 30 respectively and veteran Ray Hodgkins shot 30. Kath and Fred Williams were last to shoot scoring 33 and 32. After disregarding the lowest of the eight scores and adding in the handicap, MEB finished on 220pts and Binton B on 223pts.

Wilmcote hosted a match against Home Guard who with 4 points and an average team score of 214 points are currently topping the Shield Table. Home Guard fielded a team of eight shooters but they did not shoot as consistently as last week and needed the 8 bonus points from Wilmcote who were only able to field 6 shooters. Richard Mills was first to shoot for the visiting team and after starting with a three managed 29. Andy Morris shot 33 to pull back 4 of the handicap points for his team. Jackie Mills , Bill Gately, Irene Parsons and Derek Powers all shot 28 but John Maycock's 32, Tim Stephens 29 and Alan Brookes' 29 gave Wilmcote a narrow lead after five shooters. Sam Goodman for Home Guard, could only manage two bulls for 30 which pulled a point back from Paul Boazman who shot 29. Wilmcote for the first time this season had to rely on an A N Other score of 28 to bring their total to 213pts. Anchormen Colin Fulford and Carl Villiers both shot fours and bulls for 32pts which gave the Home Guard team a total of 207pts after disregarding one of their scores of 28 but with 8 points from Wilmcote they came out winners with 215pts.

The Norman Dale Cup open to all shooters whose average from two or more league matches is 30 or less, takes place tonight (Jan 29) at the Home Guard Club, Tiddington.
