League Report
Week 15
fter
14 weeks of league matches, the trophy was to be decided by the final game of
the season between Wilmcote and current league holders Binton A. When the two
teams first met this season, Binton A were victorious in a high scoring contest
at Binton Social Club. Both teams were level in the league table with 20pts,
however a draw would have been enough for Binton A to retain the title, due to
their higher team average.
First up for the visitors was Mark Oakey who had to settle with a score of 29.
Wilmcote’s team captain Andy Morris started for the home team superbly by firing
in 7 bulls and claiming his 4th league possible this season, despite feeling
unwell. Next on for Binton A was team captain Andy Smith who shot a
disappointingly low score of 29. Lyn Brookes fired in a steady 30 to put the
home team 7 shots in front. Next on for the Binton side was Simon Dale who
managed a score of 31, which was equalled by Tom Morris of Wilmcote. Michelle
Dale hit back with an impressive 33, which proved to be hard to follow by Gareth
Morris who couldn't find the bull and had to settle with a score of 28. Binton
A, now only 2 points behind, selected Will Troth to shoot next who attained a
score of 29. In response, Paul Boazman for Wilmcote shot only a 28, and the gap
was reduced to just 1 point.
At this stage the food had been unveiled and both teams were distracted from the competition to enjoy Lyn Brookes’ excellent catering. John Parrott, reluctant to leave his chicken leg, was called up to shoot next for Binton A and shot 4 bulls scoring an impressive 32. Jack Shipton, who is in his first season of shooting, shot a steady 28 for Wilmcote. This meant that for the first time in the match Binton A were in front, with a lead of 3 points. Next on for the visitors was Alan Dyer who shot a consistent 31, followed by Tim Stephens who shot well for a 32, bringing the deficit down to just 2 points. With one shooter to go on each side, the league title was still available for both teams. Anchorman for Binton A was Neil Beningfield who shot well under pressure getting a score of 32. Alan Brookes, last on for Wilmcote only managed a score of 30 which meant that after dropping the lowest score from each side, Binton A were victorious with a total of 217pts to Wilmcote’s 214pts. Both team totals were below average reflecting how tense this final game was. Binton A, now league winners for the third year running will accept the trophy at the presentation night in May 2009.
Delegates will meet in the New Year on 6th Jan before the Webley Competition
starts on 8th Jan when matches will be Binton A v Binton B, Home Guard v Guards
and Wilmcote v Avenue-RBL. MEB have a bye match.
