Week 2
aul Clingan shot the first possible of the season in the match between MEB and Binton A. Unusually he did not shoot first but instead shot in the middle ranks due to the fact that Ray Warnock was taken ill and had to be taken home, hence the MEB's unusual shooting order. Binton A took an early lead in this high scoring match when Mark Oakey followed by Andy Smith shot 31 and 32 respectively. Fred Williams had bad luck with his first shot which counted for nought but with only six pellets still scored 28. His wife, Kath shot 31. Simon Dale's five bulls and two fours was equalled by Sheila Clarke (MEB) and Gary Hooper (Binton). Will Troth shot fours and bulls for 31. He was followed by Jan Beattie who started and finished on a bull with a string of fours in the middle. John Parrott and Ray Hodgkins both slipped a single three when they matched scores at 29. Binton's two Neils, Bragg and Beningfield rounded the team's performance off with scores of 31 and 33 which gave a grand total of 253pts. Gordon Spencer kept out of the threes to shoot 30 which brought the MEB total to 216pts. Binton dropped their lowest score of 29 to take two points which places them at the top of the league with 4pts and an average score of 221.5 which pips Wilmcote's 4pts from 2 wins and average score of 220pts. Ray Warnock is unlikely to be available for shooting for the next few weeks. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Avenue-RBL's first match of the season was against Knights. Carl Rapson
(Knights) was up first and kicked off with a respectable 32. He was followed by
Paul Nixon-Barron (Avenue-RBL) who shot three bulls but also dropped one three
to score 30. Lisa Edwards, for Knights, is still struggling to come to terms
with nerves and was unable to find the bull. Jo Everett was relieved she managed
to keep out of the threes and with three bulls scored 31 which put Avenue-RBL
into the lead. Knights then fielded the first of three new shooters this season,
Wendy Taplin. She mirrored Lisa's score. Next up for Avenue-RBL was Guy
Ganderton whose first shot was a bull but this was followed by a three then a
run of fours. He managed to find a second bull to give him 29pts. Jon Packard
started well with three bulls but his concentration was disturbed and the rest
of his pellets went into the fours for 31. Dennis Ganderton was next to the mark
for Avenue-RBL. He had a poor night, shooting the lowest score in the match
which also swung the match in Knights' favour. Chris Pritchett was the second of
Knights' new shooters. He settled to the target well and got a credible 30 in
his first match. Louise Price started with two threes but then did better with a
bull and a couple of fours which on another target may have rung the bell. She
was disappointed with her final score of 26. It was Knights turn again and Chris
Green put away a string of fours then a three which he managed to pull back with
a single bull for 28. Dee Green wearing Peter Mole's jacket and using Steve
Ray's gun had mixed fortunes with three threes and two bulls for 27. Oliver
Ellis, the third new shooter for Knights shot a steady 28 when his bull was
pulled down by a three. Steve Ray shot 6 bulls and a four for 34. He was Avenue-RBL's
last shooter and brought the team's total to 200pts. Fran Westwood shot last for
Knights and she worked hard for her 29 which included three bulls and two
threes. Knights dropped their lowest score and with 204pts won the match.
Binton B were at home to Wilmcote. In a tight match, Andy Morris was the first
to shoot for Wilmcote and again just missed out on a possible when he shot 34.
Brian Portman was first to the target for Binton B. Though he started with a
three he pulled this back on his third shot, a bull. Lyn Brookes struggled with
three threes, three fours and a bull. Bill Flemming shot next and with his 32 he
not only set a trend for the Binton B team - the next two shooters Mike Perry
and Gordon O'nions also getting 32 - he evened up the scores. John Maycock and
Tim Stephens shot 33 and 32 respectively which gave Wilmcote a one point lead at
the half way stage. Tom Morris who does not seem to have found the accuracy he
was displaying at the end of last season shot 29 and was followed by Roy Clarke
whose score was pulled down with threes. Paul Boazman shot fours and bulls for
31. The Binton B team saved the best till last with both Rob Johnson and Ben
Chamberlain shooting bulls and fours for 33pts each. The Wilmcote team ended
with Trev Skinner and Alan Brookes both shooting 30. Wilmcote dropped the lowest
of their eight scores to take the match 219 to Binton B's 216.
