League Report
Week 5
he
Knights team, who took their name from the new Stratford Town football ground
location only last year, where ousted from their home venue earlier in the week
and after some frantic phone calls were rescued thanks to Jackie Mills putting
in a good word and being willing to share the facilities at the Home Guard Club,
Tiddington. In honour of the way the Home Guard team and committee supported the
Knights team in their hour of need, Knights have decided that they will be known
as Guards henceforth.
In the match against Binton B, Brain Portman's first shot of the evening rang
the bell but with two poor shots he had to settle for 26pts. Doug Dampier also
struggled with Binton's target when he started with a three but then shot a bull
followed by equally poor shots for 25pts. Mike Perry with four bulls for 32,
firmly put his team into the lead and they never looked back. Ruth Dampier has
not yet found the consistency with which she shot last season and could only
manage 27. Bill Fleming shot a steady 30. Lisa Edwards for Guards settled into a
string of fours with a three and a bull for 28. Kevin Johnson again had the best
shot of the night with five bulls and two fours for 33. Carl Rapson, currently
Guards' most accurate shooter shot only one bull amid fours for 29. Roy Clarke
for Binton B suffered too on this target, with a pair of threes and fours for
26. Guards' new shooter Wendy Taplin shot steadily until her last pellet fell
into the three for 27. Binton B anchormen Gordon O'nions and Rob Johnson both
shot steadily for 32 and 31 respectively. Fran Westwood, Guards' captain had her
best night of the season. She liked the new target and with 32 restored some
pride to her team after what must be described as some average shooting. The
Binton B boys took the lead and stayed there, all the way to the end against a
weakened Guards team who were missing their key shooters. The final score was
Binton B 210pts and with an A N Other score of 26 Guards 194pts.
Binton A maintained their unbeaten run and stay top of the league, when met the
eight man team from Home Guard. As usual Richard Mills shot first for the
visitors. He shot a steady run of fours with just one bull from his last pellet.
Simon Dale shot bulls and fours for 32 giving Binton A an early lead. Jackie
Mills matched Richard's score but with two bulls and a three. Michelle Dale also
matched her husband's score of 32pts, to keep the pressure on Home Guard. Sam
Goodman pulled points back for Home Guard when he shot five bulls and fours for
33, the highest score of the night in this match. Phil Hemming kept out of the
threes and shot a steady 29. Ben Goodman was consistent until one of his pellets
slipped into the threes for 27. Will Troth after his excellent performance
against Knights two weeks ago could only managed two bulls this week to give him
a respectable 30pts. Derek Powers and Bill Gately also found Binton's target
tight and both slipped into the threes for 28 and 26. Dependable Alan Dyer
showed no let up for the Binton team when he shot 31. Home Guard's anchormen
Steve Hodges and Carl Villiers also struggled on this target scoring only 29 and
31 respectively, which though respectable scores were below their expectations.
Binton who had no threes on the target scored 215pts and after dropping their
lowest score Home Guard ended on 206pts.
In the third match of the evening MEB were hosts to Avenue-RBL. Louise Price was
first to the mark for the visiting team and after last week's performance was
disappointed to score threes with her first three pellets but matters started to
look up with fours from the rest of her pellets and 26pts. Paul Clingan, however
got MEB off to a flying start with bulls and fours for 33. Avenue-RBL pulled
points back when Paul Nixon-Barron shot 30, Steve Everett and Steve Ray both
shot 31 to leave MEB only four points in front after their ladies, Kath Williams
29, Jan Beattie and Sheila Clarke had shot 30. This was a match which was
do-able for Avenue-RBL but they were not up to the task. Experienced shooter Guy
Ganderton's 27 was matched by Alison McMillan in only her second appearance for
MEB. Similarly, Jo Everett and Ray Hodgkins matched scores with 29 even though
both shooters are capable of better. Dennis Ganderton had a bull but also two
wild shots and could only manage 25. Fred Williams shot bulls and fours for 32
which well and truly saw off the opposition. Dee Green kept out of the threes
but could only manage one bull for 29 and finally for MEB Kevin McMillan shot
mainly fours for 26. Both teams had eight shooters and were therefore required
to drop their lowest score. MEB finished on 210 and Avenue-RBL on 203pts.
