League Report

Week 9

n Sunday 2 November Guards visited Wilmcote to shoot a previously postponed match. Doug Dampier equaled his own personal best with 31 and Jon Packard shooting for only the third time this season also shot 31.Chris Green put away three bulls but a three gave his 30. The rest of the team had a smattering of threes on the target which put their scores into the high twenties. With A N Other the team shot 205pts. For Wilmcote, Lyn Brookes and Tim Stephens both shot bulls and fours for 32, Alan Brookes, Gareth Morris and John Maycock shot 31, Paul Boazman 30, Trev Skinner 29 and newcomer Jack Shipton shot 28. Wilmcote having eight shooters dropped the lowest score to give them 216pts and another win.

On Thursday (6/11) there was some excellent shooting when Paul Clingan shot his third possible of the season in the match between Binton A and MEB and Andy Morris, the most consistently accurate shooter this season, shot his second possible when Wilmcote shot against Binton B. Gareth Morris also did well shooting 34. The experienced team shooting for Binton A continued their unbeaten run of 7 matches without defeat when they came up against MEB. Michelle Dale for Binton shot 33 with Andy Smith and Simon Dale shooting 32. The middle ranks, Gary Hooper and John Parrott shot 30 and Will Troth and Alan Dyer sealed MEB's fate when they shot 31. Neil Beningfield shot as
eighth man and was disappointed when his last pellet dropped for a three, the only one on the board for Binton. MEB without seasoned shooters Sheila Clarke who was on holiday and Ray Warnock who is recovering from serious illness gave new shooters Alison and Karl McMillan a chance to gain more experience in competition shooting. Jan Beattie shot 31, Kath Williams shot 30 and the remainder of the team with a spread of mainly threes and fours had scores in the twenties. Both teams fielded eight shooters and after dropping their lowest scores the final result was Binton A 219pts and MEB 204pts

Guards had their second win of the season when they were at home against a six shooter team from Avenue-RBL. Doug Dampier maintained the improvement he has shown in his shooting this season with 30 and Chris Green shot 31. Wendy Taplin who was in hospital on Sunday recovering from an operation, did well leaving her sick bed to shoot 27. Lisa Edwards kept out of the dreaded threes for 29. Fran Westwood also shot 29 but with two bulls and a three. Jon Packard took his time and shot 31. Ruth Dampier shooting with a bandaged finger almost retired from the match when she opened with a three but decided to persevere and scored 27 to give Guards a total of 204pts and victory over the Avenue-RBL team. Paul Nixon Barron shot first and scored 28. He was followed by Steve Everett who with three bulls in the middle of his seven pellets managed 31. Peter Mole had problems balancing the gun and was disappointed with his score. Jo Everett almost gave up trying to get a bull with four close pellets but then went on to finish with three bulls for 30. Guy Ganderton sitting at 15th in the improvements league shot 32 equaling his personal best this season. Steve Ray was looking good with four consecutive bulls but disaster struck as he shot a four, another bull and a four to finish on 33pts. With the benefit of A N Other, Avenue-RBL finished with a total of 199pts.

Wilmcote were favourites to win their match against Binton B but the Binton team without veteran shooter Roy Clarke still managed to give Wilmcote a good run for their money. Andy Morris and Lyn Brookes with 30 gave Wilmcote an early lead in this match. For Binton B, Brian Portman had three threes but two bulls gave him 27 and Mike Perry shot 29. Bill Fleming shot 32 but Wilmcote's John Maycock matched his score. Kevin Johnson had his lowest score this season with 29. Wilmcote must have been feeling confident when Gareth Morris just missed out his first possible to put his team 14 points in the lead. It was at this point that Binton B team turned up the pressure. First came Gordon O'nions taking two points back when he scored 31 and Jack Shipton slipped his last pellet into the threes for 28. Then Rob Johnson grabbed five points back for Binton when he opened and closed with fours but had five bulls in between for 33. Alan Brookes for Wilmcote proved to be no match for Rob shooting only 28. Binton's anchorman Ben Chamberlain shot 31 which neither Paul Boazman 28 nor Trev Skinner 27 could match. Wilmcote's lead had been reduced to just 3 points but it was enough to give them the match 215 to 212.

The Whitbread Individual Competition was shot to its conclusion last Tuesday, see next week's paper for the results. Matches tonight (13/11) Binton B v Binton A; Home Guard v Wilmcote; MEB v Knights and Avenue-RBL have a bye.
