League Report

Week 4

here were only two matches this week, Avenue-RBL vs Home Guard and Binton B vs MEB as the match between the unbeaten teams of Wilmcote & Binton A was postponed until 18th December.

It was a close match at Avenue Sports and Social Club when both teams fielded eight shooters. Husband and wife team Richard and Jackie Mills took Home Guard into an early five point lead over Avenue-RBL when they both shot 30. Irene Parsons struggled with fours and threes. Dee Green, Avenue-RBL captain, started well with two bulls and two fours but then lost concentration finishing with three threes. Paul Nixon-Barron just missed out on a bull but kept out of the threes to shoot a string of fours for 28. Steve Everett was up next and his 30 resulted in Avenue-RBL pulling back enough points to level the scores. Bill Gately (HG) was doing well until he dropped a three. Louise Price, who returned to the Avenue-RBL team this season, shot a personal best and put the home team into the lead by just one point when she shot 32. Home Guard edged in front again with Derek Powers' 27 and Carl Villiers' 29. Peter Mole had problems with his first three pellets but after returning to the mark shot a bull and four out of his remaining four pellets. Guy Ganderton kept out of the threes and with two bulls got 30. Home Guard had a strong finish with Steve Hodges and Colin Fulford, who both scored fours and bulls for 32. For Avenue-RBL Jo Everett shot 28 and Steve Ray came close to a possible with 34 for the third time in three matches. After discounting the lowest score from each team, Home Guard finished two points clear with 210 to Avenue-RBL's 208.

In the second match Paul Clingan got MEB off to a good start with 33. Brian Portman for Binton B, shot two bulls but these were pulled down by two threes for 28. Jan Beattie also shot a three but her three bulls still gave her 30. Bill Fleming also shot 28 for Binton B. Kath Williams shot bulls and fours for 33 which matched Clingan's score as the highest for their team in the match. Mike Perry shot bulls and fours alternatively for 32. MEB put on two new shooters, the first of which was Alison McMillan who shot a steady 28 which included a bull and a three. The second, Karl McMillan was less consistent shooting a three followed by a bull, then another three and two bulls followed by two threes for 27. Veteran shooters for Binton B, Roy Clarke and Gordon O'nions dipped into the threes to score 28 and 29 respectively. Sheila Clarke was consistent with fours and bulls for 32. Kevin Johnson was looking steady until he slipped into the three which with his three bulls gave him 30. Ray Hodgkins had similar luck to score 30 as well. Gordon Spencer, the eighth man for MEB shot 28. Rob Johnson shot three bulls a four and then three more bulls for 34, a personal best this season and the highest score in the match. This brought Binton B's total to 209pts. MEB dropped their lowest score to finish the match on 214pts which gives them third place in the league.

The support from league members for the charity treasure hunt held last Sunday, in aid of the Air Ambulance was disappointing. Despite the heavy rain it went ahead and those stalwarts, complete with waterproofs, who did take part and were asked to search and collect various examples of nature's treasures, blow up balloons, suck lollies and find the answers to the questions enjoyed the event. Quniton Queers were first to reach the end point, Dream Team arrived second then Eight Legs who scored highest on the quiz, arrived third. Sheila's Wheels took the longest time to complete the tasks set them. £40 was raised for the charity.

The matches tonight (9 October) Binton A v Home Guard; Knights v Binton B; MEB v Avenue-RBL and Wilmcote have a bye. For more information about bell target shooting with an air rifle, please check out our website www.sagl.co.uk or phone Rob on 07749 192 364 .
