Report - Presidents Cup - 10th January 2008
Wilmcote Club hosted
competition for the Norman Dale or Presidents Cup which was open to shooters
whose average from at least two league matches was 30 or less. Twenty five of
those eligible to shoot attended so there were a few bye matches. In the first
round, Will Troth and Chris Green both had byes. John Parrott 21 v Jan Beattie
21.1: Sam Goodman only missed out on a mini possible when his last pellet went
into the fours for 24 v Jeff Smith 18: Jackie Mills 22.1 v Dee Green 17: Bill
Gately and Irene Parsons both had byes. Paul Boazman 21.1 v Doug Dampier 18: Guy
Ganderton 19 v Lisa Edwards 21: Gordon Spencer had a bye. Gordon O'nions 18 v
Roy Clarke 20: Tim Stephens 21 v Ray Hodgkins 23.1: Jo Everett 22 v Trev Skinner
19: Steve Everett 22.2 v Ben Goodman 23.3: Ruth Dampier 20 v Fran Westwood 18.
Round 2 saw Will Troth beat Chris Green 22.1 to 20pts. Jan Beattie and Sam
Goodman, last years runner up, both tied with 21.1 and so they shot again. It
was another tight match with Jan Beattie coming off best with another 21.1 to
Sam's 21pts. Jackie Mills, the runner up in the Ladies Rose Bowl competition
last week was knocked out when Bill Gately shot 21: Irene Parsons had too many
threes against Paul Boazman's 20: Lisa Edwards got through to the quarter finals
with a bye. Gordon Spencer and Roy Clarke both dropped a three but Roy's clean
bull and 20.1pts put him through to the quarter final. Ray Hodgkins and Ben
Goodman could not maintain the accuracy they showed in the first round and went
out of the competition to Jo Everett and Ruth Dampier respectively.
In the quarter final matches, Jan Beattie saw off Will Troth with two bulls and
22pts which took her into the semi final. Bill Gately shot a dirty bull and a
clean bull to score 22.1pts which knocked Paul Boazman out. Junior shooter, Lisa
Edwards met veteran shooter Roy Clarke in the third quarter final. They both
dropped a three to score 20. Lisa again dropped a three in the re-shoot to score
another 20 but Roy shot fours and a clean bull for 21.1pts and a place in the
semi final round. Jo Everett and Ruth Dampier were also evenly matched to score
21.1 in the last of the quarter final matches. In a re-shoot, Ruth had the upper
hand shooting two clean bulls to Jo's single dirty bull and went forward to meet
Roy in the next round.
The semi and final rounds were shot with seven pellets. Jan Beattie dropped a
three but pulled it back with a clean bull to score 28.1. Bill Gately kept the
pressure on. He too dropped a three but with only a dirty bull ended just 0.1pts
behind Jan. Roy Clarke shot two clean bulls but also dropped two threes to give
him 28.2pts in his match against new shooter Ruth Dampier. Ruth dropped a single
three and with two bulls, one of which was clean shot 29.1pts which was enough
to knock Roy out of the competition.
In the final match Jan Beattie had mixed fortunes starting well with a bull
followed by fours but with two threes she scored 27pts. Ruth Dampier started
better when she shot two fours then a clean bull to give her a one point lead
after three pellets. Like Jan, she shot three fours and a three with her last
four pellets so she took the match by just one point with her score of 28.1. A
well earned win for Ruth who only started shooting this season.
This week (17 Jan) the first round of the Thompson Knockout Cup will take place.
Monday 21 Jan will see the second leg of the Avon Challenge at Evesham. The
competition for the Webley Shield starts on 24 January with Binton A vs Avenue-RBL:
Home Guard vs Binton B: Knights vs MEB and Wilmcote have a bye.
